Contemporary Artist Lanchen Mihalic is from Ormond Beach, Florida. The multi-media artist aims to use her artistic talents to share space with the world!

Lanchen has always been fascinated with space, wanting to be an astronaut and learn as much as she can about it!

So, she began creating Space Art. The desire to capture the brilliance of space on a canvas led her to resin. She began creating galaxy resin art! Her first ever resin pour was a nebula! Now, she works as a full-time artist creating her Instagram-famous resin pours and acrylic paintings.

She is now bringing her love of space to a whole new community! Particularly fascinating is the idea that because our understanding of space is relatively new and still growing, there is still not a lot of space related art! Lanchen uses her acrylic and resin paintings combined with an intensive study of space to help rectify this! She is growing the space community by combining art and scientific space discoveries!

Artistically, the colors in her resin pours are based on her own emotions and experiences. Violet, navy and magenta against the black of deep space is the most common color scheme for her resin pours, but they often feature other colors as well.

She also creates circular resin pours that act like portals into or telescopic views of space, like this resin piece from the “ASTRA” collection.

Lanchen doesn’t only produce space themed paintings, she is a connoisseur of all things space. From star parties to astronomy lectures, Lanchen brings important revelations to the STEAM field, as a whole, creating digital astrophotography-based paintings like this one.

One of my favorites of her recent works are these 3D moon surface pieces on wood. I love that she has been able to capture the texture of the moon’s surface in a portable piece of art!

Lanchen’s art is multi-faceted and amazing!

How do you attempt to share space with others through your art?

Since I had no educational background in the STEM field, I didn’t think it would be possible for me to be a part of the space community just as an artist. So, my idea was to grow a community of space lovers through the art world. Because of this my space work has reached new eyes, has helped people discover a new love, passion and overall has helped grow the space community in a new way.

What one element of space is your favorite to paint?

It would definitely have to be dust and gasses because it’s the most difficult for me to create and there are an infinite number of ways it can look.

How important is color to your process and how do you capture that color in resin vs acrylic?

Color is extremely important to me. You’ll probably notice I use a pretty recognizable color palette in all of my work, and this is because I associate colors with feelings, which sounds really weird.

Luckily getting rich color in resin is incredibly easy, making acrylic very dull in comparison. Painting in acrylic means lots of layers and of course, varnish to bring out the colors.

What specific considerations come with working with resin art?

Resin is an awesome medium, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t use it correctly. Resin releases extremely toxic fumes so you must wear a respirator while pouring, work in a ventilated area, wear gloves and I’d even recommend eye protection. Resin also has a very short working time of 20 minutes to an hour before it begins to cure.

What does a day in your life look like when you are painting?

It starts with waking up, making loads of coffee, putting in my AirPods to listen to an audiobook or I blast some good music and paint till the sun goes down. Once I get in the groove, it’s hard for me to stop.

Do you have a favorite planet? Or galaxy?

I think all the planets are fascinating in their own way. My favorite planet is hands-down, planet Earth. My favorite Nebula would have to be the Kyber Crystal Nebula, which is a newly discovered object captured by Astro Falls that I named in honor of Star Wars.

What art projects are you working on now?

I am currently working on lots of oil paintings and my newest works of black-on-black space art.

What would you tell your younger self?

If I could tell my younger self anything it would be to never give up. I know it sounds cliché, but I say this specifically because if you always keep chasing your dream, eventually you will reach it.

Lastly, on a fun note, what is your favorite space related movie, tv show, book, etc and why?

My favorite TV series is MARS by Nat Geo. It’s a docu-series featuring interviews with NASA engineers explaining our future plans to colonize Mars, then it switches to showing the worst-case scenario of their plans. It’s an amazing show. If you are interested in learning about Mars, this is the perfect show because everything is factual.

My favorite book is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I’ve read a lot of good sci-fi novels, but this definitely tops them all and feels the most realistic. Unfortunately, I can’t really explain why it feels realistic without giving away the whole plot so you will just have to read it.
